description The present thesis has dealt with bank financing of shipping and alternative or innovative forms of funding. The maritime industry has traditionally found foreign sources of finance since its formation. The shipping industry is a large user of capital, needed for the purchase of ships and it’s also a high-risk market due to the circularity of the freight market that affects the prices of fares and the values of ships. Commercial banks play a major role in the shipping industry because they generate significant capital. However, the risk borne by a bank in relation to the shipping business is proportionally greater. Shipowners favor bank lending, since they receive substantial money to satisfy their short, medium and long needs, use the low borrowing rate and benefit from the long maturity cycle of the lending and find the share capital they need.
