Summary:This thesis deals with the study and design of a municipal media enterprise that will be based on the island of Syros and will address the wider region of the Cyclades. Through the adoption of good practices from other media organisations both in Greece and abroad, as well as by developing innovative solutions for informing the public of an area that is characterised by lack of information an innovative and context specific organization will be designed. In the initial chapters communication is analysed both as an act and human need, this analysis lead to a description of mass communication and media. Many examples of social, municipal and cooperative media in other countries in Europe and the world are analysed, in order to identify and adopt good practices. The geographic characteristics of the area are also studied, combined with a description of the evolution of media in this region. Finally, the possibility of designing and creating a media consortium within different parameters to traditional media with emphasis on the participation of the local community and support of its operation in all sectors. In next section, the organisation and the organisation chart of administration is designed. Also, the islands and the spatial separation of where studios will be formed is presented. Then, the organisation is broken down to its parts and questions such as “how many employees are going to be needed to operate the organisation and what kind of infrastructure is required” are answered. At this point, the basic costs are calculated as well as how the operating resources will be secured. In the next part of the thesis, the study of the product is studied by economic, technical and marketing point of view. Also, the way to maximaze participation within the local communities is studied. Finally, the research carried out in the context of this work on communication and media in the Cyclades is presented and the results are evaluated. The appendix contains a series of logos, labels, other material that will be the visual identity of the media and the analytical results of the research.
