| Summary: | The subject of this postgraduate thesis, entitled "10 Invisible Glass Cases in the City of Mytilene", is the creation of a museum exhibition diffused in the urban landscape, in which museum objects are considered preserved buildings of particular architectural, historical, cultural and social importance, that were built in the late 19th and early decades of the 20th century.
The selected buildings reflect the glamor, wealth and social life of the upper class of both the Christian and Muslim communities during that period, but especially of the Christians who benefited financially from the provisions of the Tanzimat reforms in 1839, through oil trade and the establishment of communities in foreign countries.
A city can certainly not be "closed" in a building or a showcase, but its plurality and its historicity can be revealed through a museum exhibition diffused in the urban landscape (Chourmouziadi, 2017), if it is perceived as a "collector-pot" of the cultural heritage, which, through its monuments-exhibits, that are protected by decrees, as another type of museum display, tell their story and that of the wider social environment, of their time.
The development of this exhibition proposal is not limited to the presentation of the selected listed buildings of the cultural heritage of the city of Mytilene, as works of art, but seeks through a narrative axis, which takes into account particular and unfamiliar to the general public characteristics of buildings- exhibits , to "share" the history of the place and the people of the period under consideration and to provoke the interest of the visitor, proposing a new perspective, while offering an outdoor museum experience, in urban space. |
