National stereotypes are based on the textual and semiotic construction and reproduction of the image of the “other”. Cartoons, thanks to their multimodality, are often used by the printed and the electronic Press for this purpose. The present thesis will examine cartoons of important dates (1955, September riots; 1974, Turkish invasion of Cyprus; 1999, big earthquakes in Turkey and Greece) from the perspective of the construction of the “other” and the creation of national stereotypes, drawing on the General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH), Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and van Dijk’s ideological square.
Political cartoons were chosen from a corpus of cartoons published in wide circulation newspapers: Ta Nea, To Vima, Kathimerini and Apogevmatini from the Greek press and Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Milliyet, Tercüman and Türkiye from the Turkish press.
The aim of the present thesis is to investigate the function of humor in political cartoons as a means of shaping fundamental value contrasts that define the image of the Turk by the Greek press and of the Greek by the Turkish press. It also aims at following how such constructions change according to particular political circumstances.

Τα εθνικά στερεότυπα δημιουργούνται βασιζόμενα στην κειμενική και σημειωτική κατασκευή και αναπαραγωγή της εικόνας του «άλλου». Οι γελοιογραφίες, με την δυνατότητα της πολυτροπικότητας που έχουν, χρησιμοποιούνται συχνά από τον έντυπο και ηλεκτρονικό τύπο για αυτόν το σκοπό. Στην παρούσα εργασία εξετάζονται γελοιογραφίες των περιόδων 1955 (Σεπτεμβριανά), 1974 (η εισβολή της Τουρκίας στην Κύπρο) και 1999 (οι μεγάλοι σεισμοί στην Τουρκία και στην Ελλάδα), ως προς την κατασκευή του «άλλου» και την δημιουργία εθνικών στερεοτύπων στο πλαίσιο της Γενικής Θεωρίας για το Γλωσσικό Χιούμορ (ΓΘΓΧ), της Κριτικής Ανάλυσης Λόγου (ΚΑΛ) και του ιδεολογικού τετραγώνου του van Dijk. Οι πολιτικές γελοιογραφίες επιλέχθηκαν από ένα σώμα γελοιογραφιών που προέρχεται από εφημερίδες ευρείας κυκλοφορίας, όπως Τα Νέα, Το Βήμα, Καθημερινή και Απογευματινή από τον ελληνικό τύπο, και αντίστοιχα από η Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Milliyet, Tercüman και Türkiye από τον τουρκικό τύπο.
