| Summary: | The employment sector is the sector that will concern us in this project. The human resources engaged in business can relate to staffing a company by both men and women. This research project focuses on the human factor << woman >> and the role she plays in the Greek shipping companies. Womens’ contribution to the development of Greek shipping is an issue extremely important but little prominent. The Greek shipping company, privileged family, based largely on a silent but powerful women presence. Women, daughters and granddaughters’ captains and ship owners, wives and mothers’ masters and ship owners were the essential pillars of families to maintain and continue the nautical tradition. Although shipping has been a predominantly male field of professional activity, both at operating level in the office and on board, as well as at administrative level, gradually the participation of women, in the office of a shipping company, constantly increasing. This research aims to promote the previous survey on the perception of the career prospects of women. This research is based on data collected by both men and women working in large shipping companies in Piraeus and neighboring locations. The analysis in this study based on the use of additional elements which conducted from questionnaires completed both electronically and in writing. As part of this project, the research focuses on self-perception of career prospects for women using traditional variables such as wages and promotion process, but also variables that have been investigated more recently, such as job satisfaction and happiness contribution from work and career. Considering that the shipping industry is a male-dominated industry, we wanted to see whether the acquisition of a high-level job for a woman is difficult, due to the fact that men have prevailed in the area for years. However, we wondered why and if this condition is irreversible and we wanted to understand what are those reasons contribute, if not to the exclusion, however, the placement of women in lower-level positions. Moreover, according to research that will follow, women, for the most part, work in medium to lower-level positions, and this confirms our initial hypothesis. On the other hand we must emphasize the fact that the placement of women in middle and lower-level positions is not a peculiarity of the industry. Statistics, at both global and national levels show the activation of women in inferior jobs, compared to those of men. Also, statistics show that unemployment rates are higher in the female workforce than in men. |
