| Περίληψη: | In the European Union and especially in Greece, freight volumes on roads have increased dramatically in recent decades and it is forecasted to keep growing in coming years, thus there is a pressing need for alternative transport modes. Short Sea Shipping (SSS) is one alternative that is supported and promoted by the European Union, through financial programs and new SSS-routes subsidies due to the potential in reducing traffic on national and international roads and achieving modal shift from road to sea. Besides, SSS provides energy savings and air quality improvement since it is more environmentally friendly transport mode and further contributes to increase safety on roads. Important also considered the fact that SSS is an significant part of the overall supply chain, complementing the land modes of transport and thus contribute effectively to the implementation of European Policy in the transport sector, in order to promote multimodal transport through sustainable mobility and development. Nevertheless, unsurpassed considered the main weaknesses of SSS, namely the door to door freight transport and the increased delivery times which seem to be the most critical factors in the transport mode decision process of road transport companies. The latter, seem reluctant to be main part of combined transport, ignoring most of the times the competitive advantage of lower-cost SSS services. So, the research for the appropriate SSS-goods transport price, depending on the route and type of ship, on which road companies would prefer SSS services instead of land modes of transport, seems necessary than ever. A study for that price is attempted in the sea route Piraeus-Thessaloniki for a specific type of Ro-Ro ship, through calculating road and multimodal transport cost. |
