Τα δείγματα συλλέχθηκαν μεταξύ του Ιουλίου 2004 και του Ιουλίου 2005. Τα αποτελέσματα συγκρίθηκαν με αποτελέσματα άλλων χωρών. Υπολογίστηκε επίσης το όριο ημερήσιας πρόσληψης για κάθε ομάδα και έγινε σύγκριση με τα όρια που παρέχει ο Παγκόσμιος Οργανισμός Υγείας και ο Οργανισμός Προστασίας του Περιβάλλοντος. Τα πολυχλωριωμένα διφαινύλια είχαν υψηλότερες τιμές από τα όρια που έχει θέσει ο Παγκόσμιος Οργανισμός Υγείας.

Three groups of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) — Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) and Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs) were analyzed in 87 breast milk samples, from Thessaloniki, Greece. Milk samples were collected between July 2004 and July 2005. The results were compared to POP levels in breast milk collected from other countries. CB 153 had the highest mean concentration of all PCB congeners (28.9±20.6 ng/g lipid weight), while the mean concentration of all analyzed PCBs was 110.4±74.1 ng/g lipid weight. BDE 47 had the highest mean concentration (0.8±1.0 ng/g lipid weight) of all PBDE congeners, while the mean concentration of all analyzed PBDEs was 2.3±2.2 ng/g lipid weight. p,p’-DDE had the highest mean concentration of all OCPs (527±487 ng/g lipid weight). Based on these concentrations, we have also calculated the daily intake of each group of POPs via human milk and we compared it with the Tolerable Daily Intakes (TDI) or the Reference Doses (RfD). Most samples led to a higher daily intake of PCBs than the TDI and some samples had higher HCB than the specified limit.
