Summary:Reported recent increases in the levels of oil pollution taking the form of small round floating tar particles led to an investigation of the phenomenon undertaken by the Marine Environment Department of the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete. Carried by both wind and water currents, the tarballs were being deposited on the shoreline and beaches of northern Crete. Research project "Monitoring and control of coastal pollution in Crete". Its main aim is to locatte the origin of this type of pollution, to investigate the pathways by which the tar was transfered and deposited, and to put forward ideas to help prevent or contain the problem.
