Το Monterey Jazz Festival καθιερώθηκε το 1958 από τον Jimmy Lyons που διοργάνωσε ανάλογες μουσικές εκδηλώσεις και είχε συγκεντρώσει κατά καιρούς μεγάλα ονόματα της τζάζ στην ειδυλλιακή αυτή τοποθεσία.
