Περίληψη:In the French West Indies, water and soil pollution by Chlordecone (CLD) has become one of themajor environmental concerns. This insecticide, well known as a typical persistent organic pollu-tant, had been applied for long periods 1972-1993, exclusively on soils cultivated with banana inorder to ght the banana weevil. As a result, a long term polluted soils. Nowadays, polluted soilsare the main reservoir of CLD and the source of its dispersion in the environment. The knowledgeof the transfer mechanisms of the molecule from soils to natural environments is an essential stepfor the management of this pollution in order to minimize and reduce its impacts on ecosystemsand human health. In this purpose, in order to tackle this issue, the Watershed of the Galion river(WSG) in Martinique is selected. CLD contents in watercourses were investigated within largespatial distribution covering at large scale the stream network which drains the basin. Analysisshowed high contamination along the Galion river and its main tributaries. The contaminationdistributed according to a gradient of high concentrations downstream and the central part whereare located intensive banana cropping systems (with past intensive CLD application), to relativelylow concentrations recorded upstream of the Galion river and its tributaries. Analyzed soils at thesub-watershed scale showed its horizontal and vertical dispersion. CLD transfer from soils to waterbodies was demonstrated within suspended solids analysis. In conclusion, this study answers toour main objectives, it highlights many relevant information and data; it provides key elementsfor management and monitoring the temporal and geographic trends of CLD contamination.
