| Περίληψη: | Research has shown that many children and young people enjoy listening to audiobooks and podcasts in their free time, and some report that listening has sparked their interest in reading books. Research with adults similarly found that audiobook listening was a valuable part of many people's leisure time, with benefits ranging from relaxation to mental stimulation. Less is known about what audiobook listening looks like within family life. How do families use audiobooks at home? When and why do parents and children listen, and how does listening sit alongside shared reading and other literacy routines? This report explores these questions by drawing on findings from a nationally representative online survey of 3,000 parents and carers of children aged 5 to 18 in the UK, conducted in February 2026 by Savanta on behalf of the National Literacy Trust. The report looks at who listens, how often they listen, and how listening fits into family life. It also examines parents' views on the role audiobooks play, including links with enjoyment, family time and content choices, as well as children's autonomy, wellbeing and wider engagement with reading. The report also explores practical and attitudinal barriers to listening, especially among those less engaged in audiobook listening. |
