| Περιγραφή: | ENG- The mass production and deficient management of fossil-based polymers represent a critical threat to global sustainability, driving the search for viable alternatives within the framework of the circular economy. In this scenario, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) stands out as one of the most promising bioplastics thanks to functional properties comparable to those of petrochemical polymers and its optimal processability via fused deposition modeling (FDM). However, the deployment of this additive manufacturing technique in engineering applications is limited by the porosity and marked structural anisotropy of the parts, caused by layer-by-layer deposition. As a consequence, the durability and mechanical integrity of the parts are compromised, relegating the technology to conceptual prototyping. To overcome this barrier, this doctoral research addresses one of today's most innovative chemical pathways: endowing PLA with a self-healing nature based on dynamic covalent bonds. The central axis of this work has been the synthetic incorporation of a coumarin derivative into the molecular structure of PLA. In a first stage, ultraviolet irradiation and thermal treatment induce the photocrosslinking of the polymeric chains, drastically improving the thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties, as well as the dimensional stability of the material. Subsequently, upon the appearance of defects, the inherent reversibility of the coumarins allows the bonds to break in a controlled manner and, upon reapplication of the treatment, redimerize to reconnect the chains, successfully restoring the functionality of the FDM parts. As a synergistic complement, the research proposes reinforcing the system using dyed cellulosic fibers, optimizing the overall performance of the matrix. In conclusion, the development of these materials represents a key advancement toward consolidating PLA as a real and sustainable alternative to fossil polymers, promoting the use of FDM technology for the manufacturing of end-use parts |
