| Description (Translated): | In this thesis, the economy of Ecuador is studied during the 1920s and 1930s alongside with the impact of the Great Depression on Ecuador in 1929. In 1929 there was an estimated population of between 1.5 and 2.2 million people in Ecuador with only 14% living in urban areas. Symptoms of the Great Depression were felt primarily through external trade, highly related to the United States. But the Great Depression ended up impacting the Ecuadorian economy in five-macro variables: foreign trade, government revenue, gold reserves, inflation and Gross Domestic Product. The analysis in these variables is presented in the context of the Ecuadorian economic policies, which were pursued by consecutive Ecuadorian governments, and in the context of the international situation, especially in Latin America. From 1927 to 1932, the main objective of the "Kemmerer mission" was the fiscal and monetary stability, which established the gold standard. From 1932 to 1937, the period of instability and inconvertibility was characterized by the rejection of the gold standard, an increasing money supply, and an aggressive government borrowing. In this context, the purchasing power of wages went through three stages: before the international crisis, an increasing trend with some fluctuations; at the beginning of the Great Depression, from 1929 to 1932, real wages increased significantly; in the third stage, from 1932 to 1937, real wages decreased to be below those recorded in 1927. It is concluded that the evolution of real wages of Ecuador resembles the evolution registered for Latin America. |
