| Περιγραφή: | Our experimental setup utilizing a Fabry–Perot interferometer in combination with a heat exchanger for measuring linear coefficients of thermal expansion of magnitude over 1 × 10 − 6 K −1 is presented. It provides an accurate, non-contact method of measurement over a temperature range of − 150 ∘ C to +150 ∘ C (123–423 K), and it is especially suited for measurement of polymer-based materials. The in-house designed instrument has been optimized to eliminate external sources of apparent temperature-dependent displacement and extract only the expansion or contraction of the sample due to changes in temperature. The analysis method to deduce the thermal expansion coefficients from the resulting measurements is demonstrated. Key advantages of this method for polymeric solids include its non-contact nature, the achieved precision within ± 1 × 10 − 6 K − 1 while utilizing temperature increments within 1–2 K, and the controlled temperature ramp rates on heating and cooling up to 120 K h − 1 . Examples of materials for which we measured the temperature dependence of the coefficient of thermal expansion include high purity copper, BPA polycarbonate, cross-linked polystyrene, and carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. To demonstrate measurement accuracy, mean thermal expansion coefficients over extended temperature ranges were measured for fused silica, N-BK7, copper and aluminum and were shown to agree with literature values within experimental uncertainty. The experimental protocols followed for each of these materials are presented, along with the resulting measurements. Our utilization of this method includes investigating the cooling rate dependence of the glass transition temperature, effects of thermal history, and anisotropicity in thermal expansion. |
