Περιγραφή: This paper provides a preliminary description of such a formal model that we hope will provide a framework for building a system to manage a variety of distributed multiresolution data representations in a distributed environment. Our goal is to provide facilities that allow application programs and users to focus on the semantics associated with a given data request, not the details of data storage or the particular nature of the multiresolution representation. In the remainder of the paper, we establish the basic data exploration paradigm we strive to support, define a formal model for representing scientific data, and then define a formal model for describing multiresolution scientific data. Finally, we conclude with a brief summary of the features we feel should be incorporated into a data management system intended to support interactive exploration of very large distributed scientific data. 2 Scientific data exploration paradigm It is the job of the scientific investigator to develop hypotheses that explain the natural world. A successful hypothesis should not only explain natural behavior, but also be able to predict it with some precision. We could say that a hypothesis approximates the behavior of the natural world. Inevitably, a new hypothesis will arrive that does a better job of approximating behavior. Newtonian physics is a good approximation, but relativity is better, and quantum mechanics is better still. It is the task of scientific database designers to help other scientists develop and validate better approximations for real world phenomena. We are interested in developing tools that support scientists in the development and evaluation of hypotheses about a phenomenon, particularly when such efforts are based on data observations from the phenomenon.
