| Description: | This thesis seeks to describe and analyse the newest method of conference interpretation, i.e. remote interpreting. This work focuses on comparing stress factors in in-person conference interpretation and remote interpreting. After a short introduction, addressing the motivation behind the choice of subject matter, the development of this new interpreting technique and effects on the future of professional conference interpreters, there follows an overview of different approaches to interpretation and the various techniques used, together with an introduction to remote interpretation and to the hardware that provision of this service currently requires. In subsequent chapters, I will comment upon and analyse the most significant studies and experiments performed by international institutions and organisations such as the European Union and the United Nations in the field of remote interpretation. I have chosen to analyse experiments carried out via both satellite communications and fibre optic connectivity, since there are currently relatively few studies and experiments in the field. This section is followed by a chapter devoted to stress. Firstly, there will be an introduction to stress in general before the work moves on to focus on stress in the field of conference interpretation. There will be a summary and an analysis of the principal studies carried out since the 1980s into stress and conference interpretation. The next chapter covers the theory of qualitative and quantitative interviews and explains the difference between these two methodologies of scientific research. After the theoretical part, there follows a paragraph on the specific preparation of questions for my interview on remote interpreting. I interviewed four experienced conference interpreters with German as their A-Language and questioned them on their past work experience in the field, their views on remote interpretation, and about stress and mental health issues for remote interpreters. The final section of this thesis contains an ... |
