| Περιγραφή: | Emerging against a sociohistorical background of naturalized discrimination against women, which was sanctioned by the legal previsions of the Civil Code in effect, Carmen de Burgos’ short novels seek to highlight the unjust gender inequalities of contemporaneous Spain and to offer some very necessary feminine countermodels. The attempt to project some new and modern romance and companionship patterns, based not only on romantic love but also on intellectual togetherness, makes the writer idealize the contemporaneous English society, recurrently connected to more egalitarian relations between the sexes. Novels such as El perseguidor (1917), El brote (1925), and Cuando la ley lo manda (1932), which are the focus of the current paper, seem to mythicize the English male companion, who is capable of respect and intellectual companionship in his relationship with a young Spanish woman, and who is thus contrasted to a possible Spanish fiancé or husband, uncapable of overcoming a narrow-minded patriarchal mentality. In these analyzed novels, the projection of a belligerent ideal of the «new» Spanish woman, so frequent in Carmen de Burgos’ writings, seems to depend, to a large extent, on a change of male mentality, a proposal that remains problematic for the development of a feminist consciousness, given the ambiguous narrative endings of these novels. ; Surgiendo en un trasfondo sociohistórico de naturalizada discriminación contra las mujeres, sancionada por las previsiones legales del Código Civil en vigor, las novelas cortas de Carmen de Burgos intentan poner de relieve las injustas desigualdades de género de la España coetánea y ofrecer unos muy necesarios contramodelos femeninos. El intento de proyectar unos nuevos y modernos patrones de afecto y convivencia, basados no solo en el amor romántico sino también en una amistad intelectual, llevan a la escritora a idealizar la sociedad inglesa contemporánea, vinculada reiteradamente con unas relaciones más igualitarias entre los sexos.
