Περιγραφή: Sinn Féin founder Arthur Griffith’s use of Hungary as an inspiration for Irish politics has been read in a celebratory and anticolonial mode, despite the historical inaccuracies of his interpretation. However, a comparison with the views of another Irish critic of Hungary’s own colonial relationships highlights the fact that emancipatory politics for some (Magyars in Hungary, Irish Republicans) are not necessarily emancipatory for all. More generally, periphery–periphery encounters do not necessarily work to challenge hierarchies and power relations: more depends on the ends than on the rhetorical means.
