Description: Research indicates that as many as 25% of our nation's schoolchildren are having difficulty learning to read. In this article, the 1st year of a 3-year professional development program designed to train two rural elementary schools to implement a model for preventing reading failure is described. The purpose of the model is to provide a continuum of instruction from the general reading curriculum to intensive reading instruction for students with the most diverse learning needs. The impact of the 1st year of implementation on the performance of students at risk for reading failure and on the teachers' instruction is reported. Suggestions for model improvement and future research are made, along with a discussion of issues related to moving research to practice.
