Introduction. Interregional cluster integration is one of the additional factors of socio-economic development of Russian regions, while the formation of intersectoral cluster formations for the purpose of diffusion of innovations and diversification of production in priority economic activities remains relevant. The strategic approach to the implementation of the state cluster policy in the Volga region involves the formation of several innovative clusters based on successful cluster initiatives-leaders of world-class investment attractiveness. At that, achieving of global competitiveness implies the activation of Volga regions that do not use the potential of this form of economic development, which partly solves the problem of low domestic demand in certain Russian regions due to interregional integration within the framework of joint cluster projects. The goal of the study is to determine the main promising directions of clustering of Volga region economic space as a macroregion. Research methodology. The solution of the postulated scientific problems required the use of such general theoretical research methods as abstraction and concretization, analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, comparison and contrast. Conclusions. The methodological tools of such areas of scientific thought as economic geography and regional economy were used. The solution of the above tasks requires the use of the following scientific methods: historical, economic and statistical, comparative and system analysis; systematization of the analyzed regional economic systems, clusters and their elements; zoning, mapping, etc. Volga regions are characterized by significant differences in both the level of clustering of the economy and the nature of clustering processes in the region's economic space. The following regions with predominantly multipolar models of clustering of economic space are identified: Republic of Bashkortostan, Republic of Tatarstan, Nizhny Novgorod oblast, and Orenburg oblast. The rest Volga regions are characterized by a unipolar clustering model with the center in the urban agglomeration which is the capital of a region. At the same time, the integrating role of the capital is also typical for regions with a multipolar clustering model, in particular, when forming multicluster formations of an intersectoral type.
