Description: In a radiological incident, in addition to psychological effects on the affected population, physiological and pathological changes occur upon exposure to ionizing radiation. These changes cause serious damage to human tissues and can lead to death. Radioprotectors are radioprotective agents that prevent and reduce damage from ionizing radiation or have therapeutic effects. The present review groups known radioprotective agents according to biochemical categories and potential clinical use and reviews radiation countermeasures, i.e., radioprotectors, radiation mitigation agents, and radiotherapeutic agents, with emphasis on their status and research progress. The purpose of this review is to facilitate the selection and application of appropriate radioprotectors to prevent or reduce damage. The relevance of the study is determined by the need to analyse the effectiveness of radioprotectors in radiological incidents.
