| Description: | Negative symptoms of schizophrenia map onto at least two dimensions with partly distinct neurobiological substrates: (1) apathy, entailing a loss of motivation and pleasure; and (2) diminished expression, corresponding to an impairment of affective expression and speech production. In this chapter, we review evidence for cognitive-behavioral and neural mechanisms related to negative symptoms through the lens of their translational psychosocial perspective. With respect to apathy, which is widely defined as impairments of goal-directed behavior, there is evidence of deficits in motivational mechanisms (such as reward anticipation, reward learning, effort-based decision-making) and cognitive functions related to option generation and metacognition. Regarding diminished expression, a conceptual understanding of the underlying neurobiology is less developed. Current studies point to deficits in emotion expression, emotion perception, and limitation of cognitive resources for speech production and fluency. This chapter will focus on these mechanisms and will discuss them within the context of their relevance for psychosocial interventions. |
