As part of the archaeological works undertaken in 2017 within the grounds of the Moscow Academy of Divinity at the Trinity St Sergius Lavra, a survey of the 16th and 17th-century walls surrounding the monastery was made. Part of the survey concerned the Zhitnye Gates, which had been erected as part of the first stage of the monastery’s construction (1540–1550). It became clear that these gates had practically never been used for their ostensible purpose, and were converted into a utility space soon after their construction. Inspection trenches made it possible to establish the marks of various brick pavings that had previously been installed here, and similarly to trace the white stone drainage system, of the 18th–19th centuries, which had once run through the gate opening. Furthermore, graphical location was possible for the constructions of the mid-16th century which had stood here. |
