Abstract: The article reports on experiences from hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing of drilling control systems in ships and rigs as of December 2013. To operate fully and safely, control-system software from several suppliers are required to run and work together as an integrated system, and that Marine Cybernetics has conducted tests on seven rigs involving nine vendors. The article notes that typical findings include missing alarms and inhibit warnings, and undetected signal errors.
