Abstract: This article focuses on Nvidia OpenShell, an open source runtime designed to provide runtime governance for autonomous AI agents operating on Linux systems. Unlike traditional applications with predictable behavior, AI agents execute dynamic sequences of commands influenced by prompts and external inputs, raising new security challenges. OpenShell builds on existing Linux security primitives—such as SELinux, AppArmor, seccomp, namespaces, capabilities, and Landlock—by adding AI-specific runtime controls including filesystem restrictions, process isolation, network policy enforcement, and privacy-aware inference routing. It operates as a user-space framework that complements rather than replaces established Linux security mechanisms, enabling safer interaction of AI agents with Linux environments.
