Jakarta Bay is the estuary for 13 rivers that cross the Jakarta province area. Based on previous research, the rivers that flow into Jakarta Bay contain quite high levels of micro debris. Thus, Jakarta Bay has the potential for microplastics contained in water. This study was designed to study the abundance of microplastics in water samples in Jakarta Bay. Sampling was carried out at 4 points, namely Marunda Estuary, Cilincing Estuary, Angke Estuary, and Kamal Estuary. The samples obtained were separated from microplastic particles by other organic materials. This study has four stages, namely taking samples, wet peroxide oxidation (WPO), and filtration and drying of filter paper. Meanwhile, microplastic analysis was carried out using a microscope connected to a computer or laptop. The average abundance of microplastics in water was 0.13 particles/ml. The microplastics found were then examined by Raman spectroscopy to identify the type of polymer. The three most abundant polymers found were polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polycarbonate (PC). The abundance of microplastics can be influenced by the high community activity in the estuary. In addition, other factors of microplastic abundance are the influence of ocean currents, ocean waves, and rivers that flow into Jakarta Bay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
