| Abstract: | Organic ultraviolet absorbers (OUVAs), encompassing both UV absorbers and stabilizers, have attracted increasing attention owing to their widespread environmental occurrence and potential risks to ecosystems and human health. Road dust serves as a major environmental reservoir of these compounds. However, the role of particle size in governing their distribution and human exposure remains poorly characterized. This study examined the contamination profiles, size-fractionated distribution, possible sources, and human exposure risks of OUVAs in road dust across China. The 16 target OUVAs were widely detected, with total concentrations ranging from 3.00 to 415 ng/g. Notably, OUVAs preferentially accumulated in the fine fractions of road dust. 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole and benzophenone-3 were identified as the dominant congeners, with compositional profiles remaining similar across particle size fractions. Principal component analysis suggested that the OUVAs in urban road dust were likely associated with traffic-related emissions, the use of personal care products and domestic sources. The estimated daily intakes via dermal absorption and ingestion were below the corresponding reference doses, indicating low non-carcinogenic risks via these two pathways. Road dust nonetheless remains a non-negligible exposure medium, particularly for children. These findings provide a nationwide baseline dataset predating recent international regulatory actions, thereby providing critical scientific support for the development of future targeted monitoring programs and mitigation strategies for OUVAs in urban environments.
