Περίληψη: This paper presents a new method of drawing contour maps by computer. Especially suited to sparse data, the method differs from current schemes by not using a fine rectangular or triangular grid to generate steps in the contour lines. The algorithm constructs a triangular grid of the data points, finds an interpolating surface using estimated partial derivatives at the data points, and evaluates the surface only when drawing the contour lines. The smoothness of the contour lines depends on processing time, not storage used. The algorithm is modular — the triangulation and slope estimation steps are independent of the contour drawing mechanism, which can use any interpolant defined over triangles. The paper discusses results of testing an implementation of the algorithm on mathematical data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
