Ecosystem service valuation can provide critical evidence for conservation and sustainable spatial planning in rapidly urbanizing wetland landscapes. This study assessed the impacts of urbanization-induced land-use/cover (LUC) change on ecosystem service values (ESVs) in the Zeribar peri-urban lake wetland, western Iran. Multi-temporal LUC mapping, Cellular Automata–Markov Chain (CA–Markov) modeling, and the benefit transfer method were integrated to quantify historical ESV changes (1983–2023) and project future conditions under Basic Growth (BG) and Land Suitability (LS) scenarios. The results revealed substantial LUC transformations, including a 76.5% decline in forest cover, a 338.3% expansion of agricultural land, and a 250% increase in urban and infrastructure areas. Consequently, total ESV declined from approximately US$203.5 million year⁻¹ in 1983 to US$182.1 million year⁻¹ in 2023 (− 10.5%), primarily due to reductions in recreation (− 36.2%), regulating (− 20.4%), and supporting services (− 8.3%). Under the BG scenario, ESVs are projected to decline further, whereas the LS scenario indicates a potential recovery of approximately US$12.3 million year⁻¹ relative to 2023. Forest land exhibited the greatest influence on total ESV (Sensitivity Index = 16.3), followed by marshland (15.2) and wetland (10.3). Stakeholder perceptions were positively correlated with quantitative valuations (r = 0.642), although notable discrepancies remained. These findings highlight the need to prioritize the conservation and restoration of ecologically valuable land covers and to integrate ecosystem service considerations and stakeholder perspectives into future land-use planning for peri-urban lake wetlands.
