| Περίληψη: | Northeast China contains a cluster of shrinking cities, where resource allocation differs between growing and shrinking cities, significantly affecting the sustainability of ecosystem services (ESs). However, research on this matter remains limited. To address this gap, this study uses data from county-level cities in Northeast China from 2010 to 2020. It employs quadrant plots, a coupled coordination model, an ecosystem service matrix, and spatial autocorrelation analysis to characterize the spatiotemporal patterns of ESs across different types of shrinking cities and to examine their spatial correlation with urban shrinkage. The study reveals that cities in Northeast China are mainly characterized by expansionary development, with growth (53.11%) and shrinkage (46.89%) showing a polarized pattern. The degree of urban shrinkage is positively associated with ESs, with shrinking cities generally showing higher ESs than growing ones. Moreover, urban shrinkage and ESs are spatially mismatched, and they exhibit a significant positive spatial correlation. These findings confirm that urban shrinkage does not necessarily degrade ESs and may even enhance regional ESs. Future research should probe the underlying socio-economic and ecological mechanisms between urban shrinkage and ESs, while planning practice should actively adapt to shrinkage, reconcile ecological protection with development needs, and foster high-quality coordinated urban development.
