Περίληψη: The Malaysian Government announced a policy for a minimum wage of RM1,500 in 2022 to protect employee welfare and reduce the burden on the cost of living. However, the policy had an adverse impact on employers in terms of higher labour costs. A huge gap between the minimum wage and living wage for employees renders the former insufficient for those living in big cities such as Kuala Lumpur. This study aims to elucidate the mutual willingness of employers and employees to pay and accept the statutory minimum wage and the impact of current earnings on the survivability of both parties during the COVID-19 pandemic. Questionnaire surveys were conducted prior to the government's announcement with 898 employees and 291 employers. The bidding game approach was used to measure the willingness to pay and accept. The mutually agreed equilibrium wage is RM1,563.41 across firm sizes, a sum near to the minimum wage set by the Malaysian government. However, the equilibrium wage varies with firm size. Despite the consensus on the minimum wage level at RM1,500, this amount is far lower than the employees' threshold level of RM2,300 for adequate survival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
