Περίληψη: The lifeblood of a cross-docking warehouse is the material handling system (MHS). In a crossdocking warehouse, items arrive at the facility and, with minimal dwell time, are transferred to and loaded onto outbound trucks for shipment to their next destinations. The item transfers are executed by the MHS. The total material-handling distance traveled per day's operation depends on the flow intensities and patterns between the inbound and outbound docks. The flow patterns and intensities between pairs of docks depend on the load contents of the trucks docking at the docks. The contents of inbound trucks are determined by supplier warehouses, while the contents of outbound trucks are determined by on-site warehouse decisions. In this paper, we analyze the material-handling distance traveled in a warehouse using four rules for assigning packages to outbound trucks and a genetic algorithm to assign outbound trucks to docks in a last-mile delivery warehouse. The results obtained indicate that MHS efficiency is significantly affected by the package-to-truck and truck-to-dock assignment decisions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
