Abstract (English): The population of Vietnam reached 100 million inhabitants in 2023, close to its likely peak of around 110 million in 2050. Progress in life expectancy has slowed and fertility, after falling, has stabilized at just under two children per woman. The Vietnamese policy of one or two children was abolished in 2025 in an attempt to boost the country's birth rate. The selective abortion of female embryos, a common practice in the north of the country, has led to an increase in the male-to-female birth ratio, which reached 114 boys per 100 girls in 2010. This imbalance has long-term consequences for the concerned generations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (French): La population du Viêt Nam a atteint 100 millions d'habitants en 2023 et serait proche de son maximum, estimé à 110 millions en 2050. Les progrès de l'espérance de vie ont ralenti et la fécondité, après avoir chuté, est stable, à presque deux enfants par femme. La politique vietnamienne d'un à deux enfants a été supprimée en 2025 et le Viêt Nam cherche depuis à relancer sa natalité. Les avortements sélectifs d'embryons féminins, courants dans le nord du pays, ont entraîné une hausse du rapport de masculinité à la naissance qui a atteint 114 garçons pour 100 filles en 2010 à l'échelle nationale, avec des conséquences à long terme pour les générations concernées.
