Περίληψη: The article examines how employees’ sense of thwarted impact—feeling blocked from making a meaningful difference despite an organization’s stated purpose—can lead to withdrawal, reduced job effort, and increased turnover. Based on a study of over 1,000 U.S. workers across industries, it finds that rigid, coercive bureaucracy often prevents employees, especially front-line workers, from fulfilling their mission-driven roles, causing them to view leadership as promise breakers. The authors recommend that leaders conduct purpose audits to identify bureaucratic barriers, cultivate enabling rather than coercive bureaucracy by involving front-line input, and transparently communicate the necessity of certain rules to maintain employee motivation and alignment with organizational purpose. Addressing these issues can help organizations retain talent and sustain the meaningfulness of work beyond mission statements. [Extracted from the article]
