Abstract: The article explores the political activity of Protestant European churchmen and politicians from the onset of the Schuman Plan in 1950 to the failure of the European Defense Community in 1954. Ecumenical leadership at meetings of the Ecumenical Commission on European Cooperation (ECEC) and the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) composed of signatories to the 1951Treaty of Paris is examined. The article also discusses the role of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and its hesitancy to appear as a barrier-builder between East and West. The article examines how Protestant politicians actively worked to persuade churches to become involved in European politics. The author concludes that the Western European church response to the Schuman Plan was ambivalent.
