Περίληψη: The strongly coupled interactions among material properties, geometric characteristics, and applied load conditions necessitate a robust and broadly applicable methodology for predicting material response under contact loading. Although existing dimensionless parameters, such as the plasticity index, have been proven effective for monitoring the evolution of contact deformation in homogeneous materials, their direct application to layered systems is often inadequate because of the complex stress distributions and multi-material interactions inherent in layered media. This study addresses the challenge of characterizing the deformation state of layered half-spaces subjected to contact loading across the elastic, elastic-plastic, and fully plastic deformation regimes. Particular attention is given to systems consisting of either a compliant/soft or stiff/hard surface layer bonded to a substrate. To address this need, a new dimensionless deformation index is formulated to capture the complex mechanical response of layered elastic-plastic media. The proposed deformation index integrates elastic-plastic material properties, geometric contact characteristics, and deformation state into a unified dimensionless parameter that serves as a reliable indicator of plastic-deformation initiation and evolution. By establishing well-defined threshold values, the new index enables the delineation of the elastic, elastic-plastic, and fully plastic deformation regimes over a wide range of deformation levels, offering valuable insights into the evolution of subsurface plastic zones in layered half-spaces. The developed methodology provides an efficient framework for the analysis and design of engineering components and systems in which surface interactions govern performance, facilitating optimization of functionality, reliability, and service life across a broad spectrum of applications.
