| Περίληψη: | \nHighlights: With the deepening of coal mining, the stability control of extremely soft coal seams has become a key issue restricting the safe and efficient production of mines. However, due to the difficulties in sampling and the low success rate of preparing standard specimens, the mechanical properties and damage evolution mechanisms of extremely soft coal remain poorly understood. Therefore, extremely soft coal from the Quandian Coal Mine was investigated. Natural coal specimens were obtained using an improved sampling procedure, and systematic mechanical tests were conducted to determine their physical and mechanical properties and failure modes. Subsequently, an orthogonal experiment was designed to develop an extremely soft coal-like material using coal powder as aggregate and sodium humate and cement as binders, and a multiple linear predictive model was established between the physical and mechanical parameters and the mixture factors. Based on this, combined with PFC3D particle flow numerical simulations, the crack propagation and damage evolution process of extremely soft coal under loading were revealed. Finally, a piecewise damage constitutive model was proposed using the void-closure point as the transition boundary and incorporating both the compaction stage and residual strength. The research results show that the developed coal-like material has a mechanical parameter difference of less than 7.4% compared to natural coal. The numerical simulation reproduced the tensile-dominated tensile-shear composite failure process of the extremely soft coal. The established piecewise damage constitutive model, compared to traditional models, can more accurately reflect the compaction characteristics and post-peak softening behavior of extremely soft coal. This study provides reliable experimental methods, numerical tools, and theoretical foundations for the mechanical behavior analysis of extremely soft coal bodies and roadway stability control.A novel extremely soft coal-like material is developed using a humate-cement binder system.Orthogonal design and a predictive model enable precise control of mechanical parameters.Failure mechanisms characterized by pronounced compaction and tensile–shear cracking are revealed.A PFC3D model visualizes crack evolution and force-chain degradation during progressive failure.A piecewise damage constitutive model capturing compaction and residual strength is proposed.A novel extremely soft coal-like material is developed using a humate-cement binder system.Orthogonal design and a predictive model enable precise control of mechanical parameters.Failure mechanisms characterized by pronounced compaction and tensile–shear cracking are revealed.A PFC3D model visualizes crack evolution and force-chain degradation during progressive failure.A piecewise damage constitutive model capturing compaction and residual strength is proposed.
