Abstract: This article focuses on Vint Cerf’s perspectives on the development of the internet’s foundational protocols and the emerging challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI) agents and large language models (LLMs). Cerf, a key figure in the creation of the internet’s TCP/IP protocols, draws parallels between the early internet’s need for open, neutral standards and today’s efforts to establish accountability, trustworthiness, and interoperability for AI agents. He highlights concerns about AI agents’ unpredictable behavior, including deliberate deception, and the legal and ethical complexities surrounding their actions and accountability. Additionally, Cerf discusses the economic challenges posed by AI’s use of copyrighted content for training, emphasizing the need for new models to fairly compensate original content creators while maintaining an open digital ecosystem.
