Abstract: Abbreviation dictionaries are pivotal in facilitating effective communication across academic, professional, and technical domains. This study investigates user behaviors, challenges, and preferences in abbreviation lookup processes, aiming to identify essential features for optimized dictionary design. A comprehensive survey encompassing participants from diverse educational backgrounds reveals that users frequently encounter issues such as outdated or incomplete content, absence of field-specific abbreviations, and accessibility hurdles. The analysis indicates that user experience, interactive functionalities, and authoritative sources significantly enhance dictionary efficacy. Notably, individuals with higher educational attainment exhibit a pronounced preference for advanced search capabilities and specialized content tailored to their disciplines. These findings underscore the imperative for user-centric enhancements in abbreviation dictionaries, promoting their usability and reliability. Implementing such improvements is anticipated to contribute substantially to the development of more effective linguistic resources, thereby supporting diverse professional and academic endeavors.
