| Abstract: | This study is concerned with the homogenization of a 1D discrete and periodic structure, where the representative unit cell, specifying the material microstructure, includes two kinds of masses fastened to each other through linearly elastic springs with diverse stiffnesses. Once selected the architecture of the cell, a heuristic homogenization strategy based on the so called Piola's Ansatz is utilized to deduce the mechanical behaviour of a macroscopic continuum, resting on two kinematic descriptors. Such a medium is equivalent to the original structure in the sense that the lagrangian density, including the contributions of the stored potential energy and of the kinetic energy, remains the same: moreover, the macroscopic and continuous displacement fields equal the microscopic displacements of the masses at their locations. Micro–macro relationships allow one to identify distributed masses and stiffnesses at the macroscale on the basis of their point counterparts at the microscale. Through an approach based on the calculus of variations, which prescribes the stationarity of the Action functional and exploits the integration by parts, a system of partial differential equations is deduced, and expressed in terms of nondimensional variables. This approach exhibits advantages when the dynamic response of an elastic microstructured element is investigated and non–trivial boundary conditions are sought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
