Abstract: This article aims to trace the history of Ancient Greek ην-inflected stems from their origins to the inner-Greek developments. Unlike other cases (Germanic and Latin), ēn-inflected stems stood as a tight and analogy-resistant group – characterized by masculine gender and the designation of animals and body parts – from Proto-Indo-European to Greek. This situation allowed the preservation of a suffix -ην, which passed from the original individualizing value of PIE *-n- to a pejorative-augmentative one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
