Additional Titles: The study was conducted to determine the interrater reliability (ratter agreement) of the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) examination conducted by the Institute of Education of UCC in Ghana. The population consisted of 13,352 first year students who were admitted for the 2015/2016 academic year to pursue the DBE programme and offered English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science.  Using the stratified random sampling technique, 600 scripts of each course were sampled from twelve Colleges of Education for the study. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and paired samples t-test were used for the analyses. The results showed a high interrater reliability in the three courses English (r=0.819 at 0.05α), Mathematics (r=0.878 at 0.05α) and Integrated Science (r=0.867at 0.05α) courses. In addition, the hypothesis testing revealed that the differences between raters in Mathematics and Integrated Science were not significant at 0.05α, p>0.05 indicating that the differences had no impact on total scores. However, in English the differences were found to be significant at 0.05α. It was recommended that the Institute of Education intensifies its coordination sessions with examiners with special emphasis on the English examiners. It was further suggested that team leaders should be more vigilant with vetting of scripts.

Additional Titles: Our understanding of chemical diversity in biological samples has greatly improved through recent advances in mass spectrometry (MS). MS-based-imaging (MSI) techniques have further enhanced this by providing spatial information on the distribution of metabolites and their relative abundance. This study aims to employ laser-assisted electrospray ionization (LAESI) MSI as a tool to profile and compare the root metabolome of two pairs of native and range expanding plant species. It has been proposed that successful range-expanding plant species, like introduced exotic invaders, have a novel, or a more diverse secondary chemistry. Although some tests have been made using aboveground plant materials, tests using root materials are rare. We tested the hypothesis that range-expanding plants possess more diverse root chemistries than native plant species. To examine the root chemistry of the selected plant species, LAESI-MSI was performed in positive ion mode and data was acquired in a mass range of m/z 50-1200 with a spatial resolution of 100 μm. The acquired data was analyzed using in-house scripts, and differences in the spatial profiles were studied for discriminatory mass features. The results revealed clear differences in the metabolite profiles amongst and within both pairs of congeneric plant species, in the form of distinct metabolic fingerprints. The use of ambient conditions and the fact that no sample preparation was required, established LAESI-MSI as an ideal technique for untargeted metabolomics and for direct correlation of the acquired data to the underlying metabolomic complexity present in intact plant samples.

Additional Titles: Background: Electronic medical data (EMD) from electronic health records of general practice computer systems have enormous research potential, yet many variables are unreliable. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare selected data variables from general practice EMD with a reliable, representative national dataset (Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health (BEACH)) in order to validate their use for primary care research. Method: EMD variables were compared with encounter data from the nationally representative BEACH program using χ2 tests and robust 95% confidence intervals to test their validity (measure what they reportedly measure). The variables focused on for this study were patient age, sex, smoking status and medications prescribed at the visit. Results: The EMD sample from six general practices in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia, yielded data on 196,515 patient encounters. Details of 90,553 encounters were recorded in the 2013 BEACH dataset from 924 general practitioners. No significant differences in patient age (p = 0.36) or sex (p = 0.39) were found. EMD had a lower rate of current smokers and higher average scripts per visit, but similar prescribing distribution patterns. Conclusion: Validating EMD variables offers avenues for improving primary care delivery and measuring outcomes of care to inform clinical practice and health policy.
